3 reviews for Trader Joe’s Wild Caught Unsalted Sardines in Spring Water Reviews

In the last several months, I’ve found the sardines (which I used to eat 2 or 3 times a week) to be very very hard… it is not possible to smoosh them on a cracker: the sardines stays the same while the cracker crumbles. Whereas it started as a sometime thing, now all the cans contain these unusually tough/hard sardines. They also seem much saltier than previously, which is not to my liking. AND… the sardines are each about 2 to 3 times the size (3 fit in each tin) of any canned sardine I’ve ever encountered before. Up until the past several months, I would have rated them a 4, but now I find their hardness to be unpleasant. I intend to return the most recently purchased tins, and find another place to buy “wild, unsalted” sardines. Big Disappointment.

Like a previous reviewer (Ruth – May 18, 2023), I too used to love these wild caught sardines in fresh water from Trader Joe’s. And the price was great too. However, beginning earlier in 2023, I noticed that the sardines are consistently hard, almost crunchy, like a soft apple or a pear, NOT the texture of what’s supposed to be a fresh sardine. And they’re much bigger than sardines I’ve seen from most other brands, averaging 3 per can. These are not cracker friendly. I’ve switched over to Wild Planet Sardines or Bar Harbor. Slightly more expensive but much tastier.
