Writing this review June 2021. I bought this Trader Joe’s Chicken Marsala with mashed potatoes in Portsmouth NH. Prior to this, at least once/month I bought this where I lived in Southern Nevada—-since 2016—-and for years I ADORED it. I saw it in Portsmouth NH and was thrilled. I hadn’t had this since I left Nevada in September 2020—I loved this so much that it happened to be the last dinner I had before moving to NH. So I bought a box for myself and my Mom–so excited to turn her onto it. We are both good cooks and discerning about what we eat. We were both stoked to have this. WELL: (1) the potato recipe has changed–it is LOADED with pepper, so much I now have a stomach ache and I’m not even sensitive to foods, (2) the mashed potatoes used to be absolutely sumptuous, smooth, creamy, buttery, delicious–NOW they are gummy, gluey, hard–I stuck my form into a pile and turned it upside down and it sat like a rock on my fork–are they even real potatoes anymore? (3) the chicken was covered with some kind of hard coating with ZERO flavor except SALT! It was absolutely bland, (4) the sauce used to be swoon-worthy, leading with marsala wine and the mushrooms were to die for–the sauce used to be creamy and just incredibly yummy–now there was nearly no flavor to it and it was gelatinous and wiggly and full of cornstarch, (5) the mushrooms used to be shitakes–now they were flavorless cardboard. What in god’s name happened, Trader Joe’s? This used to be close to restaurant quality—I turned so many people onto it and everyone loved it when I lived in Nevada. Sometime between September 2020 and June 2021Trader Joe’s made this egregious change in recipe? Horribly disappointed.

Mashed potatoes were really delicious and creamy! The marsala sauce wasn’t too salty and added a lot of flavor to the chicken and potatoes.

Doesn’t look anything like picture on package and tasted like something that you’d get at a school diner.

My husband and I have enjoyed this product for many years. I’ve also returned several packages to the store because the pieces of chicken were just small little rubbery nuggets. They were replaced but they made me feel that I was doing the wrong thing rather than the product was defective. This occurred prior to covid!!

First time greatly differed from second. Typical ploy till tj catches on so read on. First time delicious, chicken hood for one serving, mashed potatoes two, plenty of mushrooms and marsala sauce! Second time serving for one, chicken piccata sauce and two mushrooms! Plus preservatives even in a pinch! Will mot buy again…hate when this happens. Dont buy the chick pic either-same thing

A couple years ago I use to buy this item all the time…a perfect dinner for two with an added salad. I have since begun to walk on by because the last time I purchased the chicken was smaller and had gristle throughout. There were half the mushrooms. Something changed just like the Chicken Pie that use to be delicious but stopped buying that because it also changed.

We think this meal is delicious and buy 2 as a regular meal in our weekly to biweekly rotation. It’s incredibly convenient (microwave-ready in about 3 minutes) and also flavorful, tender, and juicy. We are concerned this version is being replaced by another we tried a couple weeks ago that was honestly terrible; in contrast, the chicken was tasteless and very dry. Please keep the original version, Trader Joe’s—If it’s a cost issue, we would pay more for the same quality, but we won’t buy the new version again. It also looks like the chicken parmigiana is being updated… tried it, too, and also very dry chicken.

This picture is the former version, which our family LOVED and ate often. The new product is a heavily breaded chicken. The chicken pieces are smaller and thicker. The mushrooms and sauce are mixed into the mashed potatoes, which are good; but the heavily breaded chicken is very disappointing! We won’t buy it again. Please bring back the prior product!
