Wow. This is fabulous. Dark cherry and tobacco with intense chocolate flavors. Great rich, slow melting mouthfeel, with a pleasing slightly rough texture as it melts. I will be stocking up.

I bought 3 of these chocolate bars on my way home today. I love dark chocolate and buy the ones that are between 85 and 100% dark chocolate. I was 45 mins to home and ate part of as I was driving. I will never buy this chocolate again. If I’d been somewhere where I could’ve spit it out or thrown our way I would have. Next time I’m near Trader Joe’s I will get credit for all three bars. I have never had one that I did not like until this chocolate bar. I cannot recommend it. The flavor to me was really bad.

This is likely a rebranded Beyond Good (formerly Madecasse) chocolate bar, or at least a chocolate bar made by Chocolaterie Cinagra in Madagascar. You can check the ingredients, they are the same, the names (92% dark chocolate; as well as the sea salt and nibs version) are the same. The flavor profile and texture of the sea salt and nibs are the same being a strong citrus flavor typical of madagascar cacao. For me, the 92% is stronger and chalkier, I prefer the sea salt and nibswhich is less intense. The brand is made in Madagascar using local people, using cacao beans sourced from local farmers; it’s a small island and the use of slave labor and industrial, non-organic methods don’t exist. you can google chocolaterie cinagra for more details. for $1.99 at trader joes, it’s a steal.

I have tried a lot of 90%+ chocolate in my 60 years, and this is one of the most acidic I’ve ever tried. I was quite surprised and it was overly bitter. Not really the flavor profile I was looking for. Maybe this 92% could be better paired with raisins or dates to balance the acid. Will contact a chocolate expert to find out what that sour taste is about.
Chocolate Fiend –
I have to preface this by saying I LOVE super dark chocolate, even 98%, generally so it’s not a matter of lack of sweetness when I say this is the worst chocolate I have ever consumed and that includes Hershey’s which is garbage that shouldn’t even pass as chocolate in the first place. I have purchased Madagascar chocolates in the past and have never noticed a bitter citrus note that overwhelmed everything else like this one. I bought three or four bars on my last trip to Trader Joe’s because I have never been led astray by them before but now I am deeply regretting this purchase. I don’t live near to a store so returning them is not a reasonable option. Instead I am sharing this review so that I may hopefully save someone the horror of buying this chocolate thinking it will be delicious. It’s not. It’s the opposite of delicious. It’s a chore to consume. I am disappointed beyond belief.
