This is my favorite hummus at Trader Joe’s although it seems that they’re out of stock of it more often than not. If somebody from the corporate office is reading this, I would suggest they change the label from green to purple so it doesn’t get confused with the regular hummus.

Kalamata Olive Hummus Remembered, by Naomi Frankel
I first encountered this beautiful product in my early teens. I, a somewhat picky eater, was intimidated by the motley label. Figuring I should advance my humble pallet, I scooped some on a pita chip and hesitantly took a bite. To my utter surprise, my mouth exploded with flavor worthy of Pixar’s Ratatouille. I had never tasted something quite so delicious in all my life. Thus began a flavor adventure. Kalamata Olive Hummus (KOH for short) held my hand, guiding me from a world of bland into a world of color.
I remember the following years fondly. I would drive hours from my small residence in Bloomington, Indiana to the closest Trader Joes. There, I would pick up a dozen KOHs and enjoy them for the following weeks. Now that KOH has passed, I will miss it more than I can say but my sadness is lessened as a reminisce about the times we had together.
To finish, I leave you with a quote from American writer, John Stienbeck. “It’s so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shone.” Rest in peace, Kalamata.
